I recently dreamt that we were all having a  conversation about adoption. My dream began after I started writing my Teachable Moments Column. After my first column,  many of you wrote me personally to thank me for writing from the heart about life’s awkward yet inevitable moments. I started thinking about how great it would be if we were  sharing our thoughts about adoption’s teachable moments because, let’s face it, we are all touched by adoption in one way or another.

So I am taking  a leap of faith and starting a book club.  My hope is that it inspires lots of conversation. More than anything else, I want this to be welcoming, low stress environment, like a water cooler. This should be where you come to nourish yourself and chat about what’s on your mind. Anyone can join, whether you are trying to conceive, pregnant, a birth parent, a prospective adoptive parent, a parent by adoption, a blogger, or a non-blogger. The goal is to get the conversation started and see where it takes us.

So how do we start?

Well, I’ve chosen a name: The Ultimate Adoption Book Club. And I’ve also chosen our first book:The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game  by Michael Lewis. As you know, the book inspired the hit film, which has been nominated for an Oscar.

Who can join? Anyone interested in joining a virtual book club. You don’t have to have a blog to participate, but if you do, you will post about the book on your blog, so be sure to give me your URL when you sign up. If you don’t have a blog, you can post here or  you can create a blog for the book club. It’s  a great time to start blogging. Let me know if you have any questions about how to do that.

What are we reading?  For six weeks, we will  read The Blind Side, by Michael Lewis, now an Oscar nominated film.  On April 1,  I will email a list of questions to all participants and on April 7^th we will post our answers to at least three of the questions on our blog or you can post them here, at the Egg Drop Post. On April 7th, I will post a master list of participants and readers will be able to jump from blog to blog to dialogue and share their thoughts.

Where will the club ‘meet’? Bloggers will post their responses to book club questions on their blogs, and non-bloggers can send me their responses and I will post the answers here.  We will be  a completely virtual water cooler.

Why Am I Doing This? Well, now that I am travelling down the adoption path, I’ve become fascinated  by our attitudes about adoption, and I would love to have more conversations about it. 

When Do We Start? The book club will start officially March 1^st. We will post our answers on April 7^th. Feel free to join anytime.
